Hello,

I am involved with a phpBB-based discussion board called Swing Junction -

http://www.swingjunction.co.uk

We host discussions and event listings for lindy hop dancing in the UK. We are looking to improve the calendar and event listings ...

***********************************************************************************************************

As you can see, we use a calendar at the top of the board. For this, we use the 'Topic Calendar' mod by phpBB -

http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=150857&highlight=topic+calender+calendar

The full calendar is displayed here:

http://www.swingjunction.co.uk/bb/calendar.php

On the plus side, the Topic Calendar is free, and allows us to link an event to a discussion board topic like this -

http://www.swingjunction.co.uk/bb/viewtopic.php?t=358

One of the problems with Topic Calendar is that it doesn't allow for recurring events, which we have to list on separate pages like this -

http://www.swingjunction.co.uk/bb/viewtopic.php?t=14

Regular monthly events which are in the calendar need to have the date manually edited so that they go into the following month's calendar.

http://www.swingjunction.co.uk/bb/viewtopic.php?t=273

The geographical scope of the board is quite wide, because there are potentially hundreds of events each month that might be of interest (dances, classes, workshops). So, it would be useful for a board user to gear the calendar to their own region (eg. London or Scotland). So a London user would see the London calendar as a default, then be able to see calendars for other areas, or for the whole of the UK, of the whole world.

Ideally, we would like a calendar that is -

- Free or very cheap
- Allows for recurring events
- Allows linking of an event to a discussion board topic
- Selectable by region, or all regions

I would be grateful for any advice about the suitability of MyCalendar for our needs ...

"Very cheap" depends on your definition, but MyCalendar is $35 US.

Recurring events are built in. There are a varietyof recurring settings you can use.

There isn't direct linking for events, per se, but you can link to a day with several events' info.

Regional content would best be organized by the optional category system. Alternatively, a custom system could be built with separate databases for each region and a modified interface to tie them all together. I've done custom setups like that before.

Cheers,
Dan
