We plan to use this as a scheduler - so will have a lot for each day - is there a way to set the default/only view to be by-week

(with no option to change it ) and not to automatically come up as month view.

Yes, that can be done by changing the default 'switch' command in index.php. Right now, it defaults to month if nothing is selected. Change it to week and it should do what you want.
