In your screenshots I've noticed you can select from a number of databases to backup. I thought this allows access to multiple mySQL servers.

I have 5 different mySQL servers - all with different usernames and passwords. At the moment I could only access one at any one time by editing dbConnect.inc. Can you easily add a feature that lets me access all five of my SQL servers? Maybe include an array of hosts where I could select which server to backup from the browser.

Many Thanks, please send me a quick reply.

Hi,

If you look through the feature list on the program page, it talks about multiple databases but nowhere multiple servers. Is this for a hosting application? I hadn't even considered the need for acessing multiple servers.

It shouldn't be too tough to add an input form for selecting host, username, and password; even easier if the same username and password are used for each server. In the simple case, all you'd need is a host select form (like for the databases), with the selection passed through the db/table forms as a hidden variable.

Cheers,
Dan

I first assumed the word "database(s)" (above) means many different servers. I came to this assumption because our host lets us setup one database per server - in fact I wasn't sure until now that you can setup many databases on the same server. But anyway, suppose it was my mistake for the confusion.

I'll try add something that could access a mulitple number of servers, if I have no luck, could you easily do this and maybe add this as a feature? I'm sure it will come useful not only to me.

Gotcha. To clarify, tables contain data, tables go in databases, and databases reside on servers.

I'm guessing the wording is actually one database per account. One database per server would not make any sense. Thousands of databases can reside on a server.

Are you positive multiple servers is what you want? It sounds like you aren't running the servers yourself, so unless you have some reseller plan where you manage several servers, I don't understand the purpose of the application.

I don't see any reason why it couldn't be built in, but I'm hesitant to do it as a standard feature because: a) it's less secure in several ways, b) is potentially confusing to the majority of people who will not need it, and c) related to 'b,' I doubt anywhere near even 1% would require the functionality. Because of 'c,' I'm inclined to say it's better suited to a customization.

Our host gives us a limit of 5 databases to setup. Each database is setup on completely seperate servers (db1.host.com db2.host.com etc.) and we have been recommened to use up all 5 databases, so if one of the database servers goes down the other ones may still be up. At the moment, we use db1 for forum, db2 for our portal system etc.

I believe another reason why our host has set this up is to allow us to resell parts of our host space, but we're not doing that, we're just using it all 5 of our databases for our own benefit.

We would like to backup all 5 quickly and easily without having to edit configuration files every time just to gain access to each database. Our host is one of the largest in Europe (1&1 Internet Ltd) and if they setup their hosting program like this, I'm pretty sure alot of other people are looking for a script very similar for their own use. I'm just saying this could be useful.

Could you implement this feature to the current version? You could clearly state that this optional. Or perhaps you could just help me add this feature?

Regards,
Chan

That strikes me as an extremely odd approach toward data redundancy. I'd have to hear from a lot more people with similar setups and explanations for how it's advantageous before I'd be anywhere near convinced... I'm never in favor of complicating the simple to account for unnecessary peculiarities.

My suggestion at present would be to do separate installs of Backup DB for each server you wish to access. Just bookmark them in your browser and it'll be about the same as having one installation control them all.

Cheers,
Dan
